Dis 'n Dat
educational units

A proposal: Dis 'n Dat (for this and that)

Middle school students often need connections to the future or, different, motivation for learning. " Why do I have to learn this?" is a common question.

The Standards of Learning are important and have many effects. Getting past them opens doors to life long learning and progress.

What if Rural System or others sponsored a contest, perhaps once a year, for people to win substantial prizes ($500 - first, etc.) based on knowing word usage, one aspect of SOL comprehension and journalism abilities.

On the back of pocket cards (about the size of playing cards, with advertising and the answer on one side) there would appear something like the following

Sample playing card
Dis 'n Dat - Alpha
Alpha a game for scholars. (check www.DisnDat.com.)
Collect the cards or buy a set from the website - Get ready for the next contest held every November - Demonstrate your continual gains in mastering the English language.

Which is it, Dis     or Dat ?
The resident of the community became very cost- effective in achieving her objectives.
Dis - effective ?    or Dat - efficient ?

Learn the difference from www.DisnDat.com, from your teacher, a guru, or from the library. The answer is on the back. Remember proper usage for entering the Dis 'n Dat contest. You might see the question again. Christiansburg citizens know that good grammar counts.

  1. There may be many units other than Alpha (for word usage), Action (verbs), Spell (spelling), Modify (adjectives and adverbs), Figures (figures of speech), Special (special and unusual words and useage), and Comprehendo (reading comprehension)
  2. The Units are excellent foils for marketing to youths for the future.
  3. The units are especially good for memorializing parents and those who love words and reading and writing.
  4. Financial gains can be likely from simple use of the cards, their collector value, their trading value, and in-school use value and class motivation
  5. Small books can be written to accompany the cards and the games.
  6. All units are designed so that they can be played at the computer ... from a javascript action unit.
  7. Students can collect cards for personal use and pleasure, competitive play, and card trading
  8. A box of cards makes an excellent award for a student
  9. There may be card-play for keeps --- students compete and the winner takes the card or the deck of won cards (e.g., 5 cards vs 5 cards as in games of marbles. A student holds a card, reads it and based on the answer, wins or loses the card.)

Perhaps you will share ideas with me about some of the topic(s) above .
